Safari could not open the page “http://www.brtom.org/” because the server stopped responding.

to the tune of dock boggs’ “sugar baby” via bill frisell …

Got no sugar baby now,
I’ve got no honey baby now,
I’ve done all I can do
For to see peace with you,
I can’t get along this a-way.

Oh, I’ve got no sugar baby now,
I’ve got no honey baby now.
I’ve done all I can do,
I’ve said all I can say,
I can’t make a livin’ this a-way,
I can’t get along this a-way.
I’ve got no honey baby now,
I’ve got no sugar baby now.

Got no use for the red rockin’ chair,
I’ve got no sugar baby now,
I’ve got no honey baby now.

Laid her in the shade,
Gave her every dime I made,
What more could a poor boy do?
What more could a poor boy do?

Done all I can do,
I’ve said all I can say,
I will send you to your mama next payday,
I will send you to your mama next payday.
I’ve got no sugar baby now,
I’ve got no honey baby now.

Who’ll rock the cradle?
Who’ll sing the song?
Who’ll rock the cradle when I’m gone,
Who’ll rock the cradle when I’m gone?
I’ll rock the cradle,
I’ll sing the song,
I’ll rock the cradle when you’re gone.
Got no sugar baby now,
I’ve got no honey baby now.

i mentioned the monstrous appearance of the front page of my site, brtom.org, over on the school computers … so … i tweaked the page a bit & got it down to 780 px width …

today the tech guy tried to adjust my school computer’s monitor display … but he still couldn’t get the whole width to fit … i.e. one must still scroll left & right … so …

i really need some feedback here (i’ve already heard from you, mom, thanks) … if you would take a moment to look at that page on your screen & tell me how it looks, i’d appreciate it much …

does it completely fill your horizontal space? do you need to scroll left & right to see the whole thing?

OR

does it fit nicely on the horizontal plane? and perhaps there’s even a bit extra on the sides … can you see your desktop back there?

this matters to me because i care how my site is being perceived … i know how irritating that left-right scrolling can be … and i wish i could introduce it to my students with it looking its best … alas, that don’t seem likely

ghosts

now i’m chatting with pete … and he says this weird thing just happened … his cellphone dialed up - of its own volition - donna in the living room … he didn’t touch it … didn’t even know it was there …

but now he says he must have touched it .. he’s backing away from the most logical irrational explanation that we are in fact living in a world of ghosts …

just got off the computer with mom & pat & meg & duke & eric … a First Ever for each of them … & here’s a memento … a picture of mom & pat watching a picture of me t(m)aking a picture of them …

the blur is both my unsteady hand & the video chat screen … but you get the picture

so i’m here at school … & we had some talk … & then we’re sent to our rooms … so i’ve arranged my desks … & i need to get the books out of their boxes … and the posters on the walls … and i need to set up this year’s grading/attendance programs … and all of this will happen … but …

i took a look at my site … brtom.org … and it’s too big for the monitor here … an 11″ Vivitron 1572 (year of design?) … brtom.org is too big, drifts off the right side … and i know this is my design problem … but i’m wondering if any of you out there are experiencing this literal hugeness of my website … does it require you to scroll left & right in order to see the whole thing? it shouldn’t … let me know, please

(but then, even this blog is big … probably an issue with this monitor’s screen settings … over which i have no control … schools being what they are … grrr)

passed the best parts of the day here on the computer … trying to get some power over this new (to me) Adobe® GoLive® CS2 … redesigning my front page … and then maybe some of the others … probably do it in patches as i go … & i know this is not the wisest way … but my site is so rambly all over the place … i wouldn’t know where to begin (or have enough time to) …

pretty dense … i spent almost an hour of my life seeking out the thingy that would let me create a tiny arrow … i could’ve quit … but one must not be daunted by the lack of a tiny arrow … and it was - of course - right there in front of me al the time … as we know it always is … the Line Tool … i might have heard it giggling

this evening i stumbled into the wacky world of css (cascading style sheets, mom) … first time ever … and actually … think i understand the little bit of it that any newbie is entitled to understand … how fairly ordinary typing goes all electrical … for us

last night my brother pat & i had a good long phone talk … then we said good night … then he pops up on iChat because i hadn’t done it before … & it has quite a different look here on the new setup … then he says wait a minute … let me try something … a phone connection … and in a few seconds i was talking to him via the computer … whoa … then he says o, pete’s online … let me try something else … and before i know it a camera window opens & there’s pete out in california looking right at me … & there i am looking right back … and we had a funny conversation … & i got to see & say hi to donna & karen … & they got to see the cat down there on the floor & up close … this is all way too jetsons for me …

& i was wondering this morning about how many times in the course of any day does one get to say in all my life i have never done this before … this is an actual First Ever … when this New is produced by a flashy new technology (Look at me! Ain’t I cool!?) it’s easy to note … but what about the smaller, more “natural” first that just happens (& often can’t be repeated) … like the flash of a black weasel across yr path … here, there, gone … boy …never saw that before!

this has something to do with the way Wonder vanishes from a life … & how it might return … especially for us older coots … just pay attention, dude

new things 1

Posted in change, computer, Comments Off

maybe i could tell the tale of a new computer … i’ve been living it for the past three weeks … & it’s a bore to ponder … so here’s the gist …

a most extravagantly generous & undeserved grant from the murphy foundation put a new imac on my desk … click here to see it for now … pictures of my very own may follow once i get my photo issues resolved …

the transition from one old blueberry g3 running os 9.1 to this fine g5 critter on os x tiger … began a fairly wild ride that hasn’t yet ended … one doesn’t just get a new machine … one loses all one’s old aps … one threatens one’s beloved peripheral devices … one requires a more muscular internet connection …

but read me right … i’m not complaining … this is what summer’s for … if yr lucky to be me … which yr not … but i am … this is a good adventure
